Green Software Design - Certificate

Green software makes an important contribution to climate protection. For end customers and the public, however, it is not apparent whether climate protection has played a role in software development. That is why the Green Software Design Label exists. It distinguishes software that has been consistently developed according to the best practices of Green Software Design. Consumers can thus perceive and appreciate this performance and take it into account when making purchasing decisions.

Scope of application

The GSD certificate is issued for a specific software of the applicant (exact name and version number must be available). “Software” refers to a software product (e.g. a financial management software), an open source software (i.e. a freely available software product) or an individual software, i.e. a software provided by a company itself (e.g. the online banking of a bank). The label is only awarded for web and/or mobile applications including server components (with or without connected database).

The label certifies that best practices for minimising the software’s carbon footprint were used in the design and development process. “Best practices” refers to the options for action known according to the state of the art (at the time of certification) that contribute to the goal.

The framework conditions in the individual contract for the GSD label apply, as well as the issued declaration on the correct use of the GSD label.
