Syngenio becomes the first European IT company to join the Green Software Foundation

International initiative with the goal of standardizing “Green Software Engineering” and reducing CO2 emissions through optimized programming.

Syngenio AG is the first European IT company to become a member of the Green Software Foundation (GSF). This makes Syngenio one of the first twenty companies worldwide to support this initiative financially and by participating in the working groups and projects. The GSF was founded in 2021 as part of the renowned Linux Foundation in the USA.

Goal of the Green Software Foundation: Reducing emissions caused by software.

The Green Software Foundation’s mission as a non-profit organization is to create a trusted ecosystem of people, standards, tools and best practices for green software. “GSF is pleased to welcome Syngenio to our Foundation,” said Asim Hussain, Chairperson of the Green Software Foundation. “Contributions from members like Syngenio make GSF the leading organization solving today’s toughest manufacturing challenges, and we look forward to working with the Syngenio team to advance Working Group Innovation projects.” GSF was born out of a shared desire and need to collaborate in the software industry. The main goal is to push the topic of green software engineering. Together, the aim is to drive forward standardization and work more closely together internationally. In this way, the emissions caused by software shall be reduced. In Germany, a good 900,000 people are involved in the development of software. They face an enormous challenge, because experts see a savings potential of up to 10 TWh annually through more efficient programming – in Germany alone. This is equivalent to the annual output of four medium-sized coal-fired power plants.

“Integrating the idea of climate protection into software development is a task that can only be solved jointly. We are pleased that the Green Software Foundation is a global initiative for this. So far, most of the members are globally active organizations based in the USA. We see it as our task to make a European contribution. This also creates a constructive link between our own Green Software Design Community and the Foundation“, says Jürgen Funke, member of the Syngenio AG Executive Board, about the company’s commitment to the GSF. Syngenio AG has set itself the goal of developing its software in a climate-friendly manner. “In this way, the software industry can also make its contribution to Germany’s climate neutrality, and consumers will soon also be able to use climate protection as a criterion when they choose an app or an offer on the web,” says Green Software Design Manager Stephanie Kamp of Syngenio.

As a new member, Syngenio brings great experience in defining a benchmark for the “greenness” of software. In particular, the experience from the development of the Green Software Expertyzers is a solid basis to work with in the GSF. In the future, Syngenio will be even more involved in this area. The experiences and results will then also be available to the members of the Green Software Design Community.
