Green Software Design: The initiative for sustainable software engineering

Welcome to GREEN SOFTWARE DESIGN!
Some also call it Green Software Engineering. Or Green Code. Whatever you want to call it: Our website sees itself as the central point of contact for this in German-speaking regions. (And who knows? Maybe beyond that at some point.) We collect and offer information as well as data involving the subject of sustainable software design.
What is GREEN SOFTWARE DESIGN actually supposed to mean? It’s quite simple: It means looking at all aspects of software development from the perspective of their climate impact as well. Climate protection is becoming a new quality criterion that we keep an eye on just as much as reliability or user-friendliness.
Why are we doing it? Because we are masters of software development. Of course, we could simply do the same for environmental protection as everyone else. Buying green electricity, using economical means of transport or replacing travel with video conferences – there are plenty of places to start. But we can bring more to the table: Namely our expertise in software engineering. And therefore implement climate protection in our area of competence as well. We can move things forward instead of just discussing the things we have to do without. And if we don’t do it, no one will.
That is why we, as Syngenio, have taken the initiative. Not only have we been working to reduce our own carbon footprint as a company since 2019. (And we can now officially call ourselves carbon-neutral.) We have set up a dedicated team to drive Green Software Design. For example, it collects climate data and raises awareness in our development projects. This website is the result of team work.
The next step will follow shortly: The foundation of a community where information is shared, where questions are asked and people report on their own experiences. Everyone is invited to take part: Developers, application development managers, sustainability officers, companies and research institutions. Access will soon be available on the website, meaning you can be part of it from the very beginning. We look forward to seeing you!
